To do in Montañita: activities, tips and recommendations

If you are ever lucky enough to find yourself in Montañita, you’ll want to know what you should do. It’s such a vibrant town with many opportunities – you don’t want to miss out on something.

I have visited Montañita, so I can tell you exactly what you should do in Montañita. Let’s get straight into it!

1. Surf: do in Montañita!

The most obvious one is this one: surfing. Famous for its stunning beaches and awesome waves, you cannot miss out on the Montañita surfing experience. Let’s get you a board and a shirt!

I took my surfing lessons (and Spanish lessons) at Montañita Spanish School. They really help you out with surfing in the beginning, so no worries if you’ve never done it before. Neither had I!

First, you will start with a warming up. Then, you will practice your skills on the beach, in the sand. This way, you know exactly what to do and how to move when you’re in the water.

Eventually, you will go into the waves and try to stand up. It’s harder than you might think! Don’t feel bad if you don’t manage to stand up in the first class (I sure didn’t). You’ll have plenty of time to practice.

2. Watch the sunset on the beach

This is an absolute must when you are in Montañita. The beach is so beautiful, and the sunsets can be amazing. The beaches are also not too crowded, so you can find a great spot to sit, guaranteed!

My tip: bring a speaker for some music, buy some pizzas (I know some good food places in Montañita), and sit down close to the water. It will be an amazing experience, which I’m sure you’ll repeat many times while you’re there.

3. Do in Montañita: get a tattoo

Okay, this might not be for everyone, but it can surely be an amazing experience! Montañita is an amazing place to get a tattoo, if you want one. I have made it my goal to get a tattoo in each country I visit… Okay, maybe not every country, but a few.

There are multiple places where you could get a tattoo. I personally got mine at the Amadeo tattoo art shop. I also know people who got their tattoo somewhere else. It all depends on your style. Do you like small, fine-line tattoos, like me? Then Amadeo is the place for you!

4. Go out in Caña Grill

Montañita is known for its crazy parties, so if there is one thing you should do in Montañita, it is party. All around the town, you can find places to party, have a drink and play beerpong. There are even places with open bars for $6 (yes, really)!

Fancy a drink? Go to the cocktail street, where you can find all kinds of cocktails for only a couple of dollars. It’s cheap but delicious, and it will get you tipsy in no-time. Do you want to dance after that? I know the perfect place for you.

Located right on the cocktail street, is Caña Grill. Honestly, I spend most of my party nights here, since it’s really the place to be. They play a mix of pop-songs and Spanish music, and there are both tourists and locals.

5. Do in Montañita: learn Spanish

If you want to know how to talk with the local people, and what all the menus and street signs say, you might need some Spanish lessons. Actually, Montañita is the best place to learn some Spanish if you want to. Big plus: they totally understand that on some days, you will skip class because of your hangover.

I choose to take a lot of Spanish lessons, but you can also just go for one or two weeks. This way, you can learn the basics, and you’ll have some idea of what is being said. You can also choose to do more weeks if you want to of course. You can even take classes in different locations!

All of my Spanish classes have been booked through StudyTravel. They are the greatest people ever, and really thought about what would be suitable for me.

6. Daytrip to Isla de la Plata

Isla de la Plata

If you want to get out of Montañita for the day, Isla de la Plata is the place to be. It takes about an hour to drive to Puerto Lopez by car, and then another hour to take the boat to Isla de la Plata.

Isla de la Plata is also called “Tiny Galapagos”, because the nature there is very similar. Can’t afford to go to the Galapagos Islands? Then Isla de la Plata is definitely a good place for you. You can walk around in nature, spot the cute Boobies (birds with blue feet!) and you can even go snorkelling in the water.

7. Go for lunch in the Good Vibes Cafe

Looking for a cute place to get lunch (or breakfast)? Then you should definitely go to the Good Vibes Cafe. Here you can find a lot of delicious plates with (semi)healthy lunch options. There are a lot of vegetarian options as well, and even some vegan ones!

8. Explore the nearby towns

Last but not least, you should definitely explore the nearby towns on the coast and in the mainland. This is something I didn’t do enough, and I think I should have. If I were to go back, I’d definitely make an effort to see more of the area.

For example, Puerto Viejo (where you can go to Isla de la Plata), seemed really nice, but I didn’t spend any time in this town either. And when you go surfing, you can go to Olon. Also such a cute beach town that would be worth it to explore. I have also heard good things about Ayampe.
